McPherson University (McU) is a private Christian university in Abeokuta, Seriki-Sotayo, Ogun State. Nigeria. It was founded by the Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria in 2012.

Established in 2012, McU is fast taking shape as the hub of intellectual activities. The University is equipped with modern ICT facilities. The institution is also known for academic discipline, moral probity and its competitive edge which is revolutionizing the Nigerian education.

The Ivory tower is an initiative of the Foursquare Gospel Church, Nigeria which has taken education as one of its basic foundations with a view to raising balanced “champions” who will lead and bring the desired change.

The University was licensed by the National Universities Commission (NUC) on Tuesday, 28th day of February, 2012, as the 49th private University and 121st University in Nigeria.

At McPherson, we are dedicated to ensuring that students are thoroughly prepared for the now and future as the world is changing. Programmes, spiritual and social activities are structured to enhance students’ academic ability and minimize distractions.

As one of the nation’s private Universities, now famous for academic excellence, the University is home of seasoned and dedicated workforce of experienced academics and amiable administrative staff.

The University is located on 122.3 hectares of land at Seriki-Sotayo, near Foursquare City, Ajebo. It is bounded on the north by the Ogunmakin-Ajebo-Abeokuta road and on the east by farmlands and the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The site of McPherson UNIVERSITY lies approximately within latitude 7º07N and 7º08N and longitude of 3º41N on elevation of between 82m to 109m.

Moreover, the University will be unique in its approach to training by going beyond the traditional methods of theorethical education, thus contributing its quota towards improving the social, political, cultural and economic status and structures of the immediate society and positively influencing the larger society.

The University Logo

The Church, with the desire to contribute and impact young ones, proposed to establish the Department of Religious Studies as a tuition-free programme, to encourage ministers and other people who have interest in studying the course. It therefore, commenced in the year 2014/15 session with just three (3) students. The pioneer Head of the department was Dr. C. Nwaguma, who put in efforts to build the department before he left the system. The department has since made reasonable progress in terms of students’ enrolment, staff strength, community development, among others. It is interesting to note that the Department had full NUC accreditation to produce graduate in the programme.

Board of Trustees

McU’s first Board of Trustees was constituted in 2012 under the chairmanship of Dr. Afe Mayowa.  After its stipulated tenure of five years, the Board was reconstituted in 2017 with Dr. Afe Mayowa reappointed as its chairman alongside a number of members of the pioneer Board. From 2019, the chairman has been Rev. Tunde Lemo

Chancellors

The pioneer Chancellor of McPherson University was HRM, Ogiame Atuwase II, CON the late Olu of Warri who joined his ancestors in 2017 following which Dr. Christopher Kolade, CON was appointed as the second Chancellor of the University.

Campus

The colleges are located on the east side of the university.

The university hosts three instructional buildings, a health center, garden, library and an administration building. The multipurpose hall houses the dining hall and the chapel. Outdoor field sports are played at McPherson Sport Centre. In the summer of 2012, the sport center was renovated to contain a basketball court, volleyball court and lawn tennis court.

As a licensed Institution, McU runs degree programs that award Bachelor of Science and of Arts from three Colleges. The Institution runs pre-degree programs in selected courses.

Library

The library is situated besides the administrative office and serves the whole University community. The library houses the college archives, academic support services and career services. It offers computers for student use, with software including internet access and word processing.

Dr. Christopher Kolade, CON is the Chancellor of McPherson University, Seriki Sotayo, Ogun State, Nigeria. He is a respected Nigerian diplomat and seasoned academic. Born in Erin–Oke, Osun State, Nigeria in 1932, Dr. Kolade attended Government College, Ibadan and later proceeded to Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, for Bachelor of Arts

Governing Council

The Chairman of the University Establishment Committee charged with the responsibility of planning the take-off McPherson University, Professor Isreal Adu, was appointed the pioneer Pro-Chancellor of the Uninversity in October 2012.  At the expiration of the tenure of the pioneer Council in 2017, the second Governing Council headed by Professor Olurinde Lafe was appointed and was in charge till September 2019 after which Professor James Nda JACOB, the current Ag. Pro-Chancellor & Ag. Chairman was appointed.

Vice-Chancellor

Professor Adeniyi Agunbiade, FBSAP, RAS was appointed as the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of McPherson University at the take-off of the University in October 2012.  At the expiration of his first tenure of five years in October 2017, his tenure was renewed for another term of five years.

Other Principal Officers

Mrs. Adebola Abegunde, a retired Registrar of the University of Lagos was appointed the pioneer Registrar of the University in October 2012.  On completion of her tenure in 2017, she bowed out of the the service of the University.  Thereafter, Mrs.Tokunbo Alaba Kehinde a former Director in Obafemi Awolowo University was appointed as the second Registrar of the University in 2017.

Mr. Ebenezer Adeyemi Onilado from Olabisi Onabanjo University who at the take-off of McU in October 2012 assumed duty as a Deputy Bursar was later appointed as the pioneer Bursar of the University in 2015.

The University Library has Mr. Abayomi Tunji Agboola, a retired University Librarian of the Federal University of Agricuture, Abeokuta and Caleb University, Imota, Lagos as the pioneer University Librarian of the University.  He also assumed duty on 2nd October 2012.

Deans

At inception, the College of Humanities (COLHUM) had Professor Olusola Ojo as its pioneer Dean.  He was later succeeded in 2018 by Professor Kenneth Nwoko, the second home grown Professor of McU.  At the College of Natural Sciences (COLNAS), Professor Olusegun Atanda, the first home grown Professor in McU has been serving as the Dean of the College since 2012.  The College of Management Sciences (COSMAS) had Dr. Anthony Okubanjo as its pioneer Ag. Dean.  He was succeeded in 2015 by Professor Olanrewaju Ibidunni who, after serving out his term, was succeeded in acting capacity by Dr. Emmanuel Maku.  In 2018, Professor Olusola Ojo was appointed the substantive Dean of the College.

Accreditation Status

As stipulated by the National Universities Commission, the University faced its first accreditation for 12 of its initial programmes during the 2015/16 academic session at the end of which nine (9) of the programmes on offer received full accreditation while the remaining three got interim accreditation.The second round of accreditation came up during the 2017/18 academic session following which all the five programmes presented received full accreditation.  With this, all the 13 programmes currently being run by McU have full accreditation status.
